A thought I kept...
An honest conversation where I share the thought that made me start my own business over 20 years ago...
Hello lovely one
How is your heart feeling today? How are you navigating these final few weeks of 2025?
We are deep in the fullness of the last few days of term before school finishes on Friday. I am in a constant state of excitement, exhaustion, joy, overwhelm, gratitude, grief, over stimulation, awe and wonder… plus many other emotions, often simultaneously! This time of year certainly illuminates the multi-faceted nature of being human.
I hope you are being kind and gentle to yourself through it all. No matter what we are experiencing, the greatest, and most important thing we can do, is to treat ourselves with kindness and compassion. That isn’t always the easiest path, but some words I wrote at the weekend in my journal which have stayed with me and might support you too, are…
‘Can I love myself through the lows?’
It is more straightforward to be compassionate to ourselves when things feel light and bright, but when the inevitable lows arise — which they do in varying degrees because our linear nature as humans means striving for constant highs is an impossible expectation — instead of trying to fix/judge/berate ourselves and seeing these moments as a failure or a signal of our worthiness, can we love ourselves through it? Or if love feels a stretch, can we at least weave the intention of loving kindness into our actions and the way we talk to ourselves as we ebb and flow?
I am certainly taking this reflection into the next few weeks as I know that this season brings with it a rollercoaster of emotions, and if there is sadness, disappointment, frustration, or any other more challenging emotion to sit with, I hope I can use this question as an anchor.
Maybe you can use it too?
A potent conversation
A couple of weeks ago I was invited to speak to the wonderful Claire Fitzsimmons for her podcast A Thought I Kept. I absolutley love podcast conversations and it was such an honour to be asked to share a perspective that had stayed with me and shifted my outlook and experience in life.
The thought that kept coming to me was a very simple one — almost too simple I thought — but it has always served as a powerful anchor for me.
This thought was the prompt for me to start my own business over 20 years ago, as well as embrace multiple pivots over the past two decades. It is the thought that has kept me going during challenging phases, and I hope it is a thought that I pass on to my children as they grow older.
The conversation took us in many directions and I adored the questions that Claire asked. We talked about… anxiety and my experience with panic, about self tending and how we can find goodness throughout our days, about sustainable change in our systems and so much more.
I hope you enjoy listening to this episode. You can read more and listen through the link below, or on Spotify here and Apple here.
