There is a Unicorn in my bathroom
A poem about motherhood, mess and the wonder of the early years of...
Hello lovely one
How is your heart feeling today?
I am adding a new thread of expression to my publication here on Substack, and that thread is poetry.
Poetry is something I have written and shared for many years. It started for me when I used to read other people’s poems out at the end of a Yoga Class, then one day I found my own words tumbling into the format of a poem and began to share them in classes.
When I go through big processes in life, I seem to find the way to integrate them through writing poetry. When my Nanna passed away I wrote a poem for her. When my husband and I separated, I wrote a poem for him. When my daughter was born, I wrote poetry. When our beloved dog left this earth, I wrote a poem.
There is something soothing and settling about the rhythmic words woven together that touches something me deeply. It is in part the writing of them, but also in the reading of them too. I find I can read poetry over and over again and receive something new from the words every time.
It has been a while since I wrote any new poems, but the spark to share them is returning, and so I wanted to create a little space here in this publication to offer some of them to you in the spoken and written word.
(And for paid subscribers there is an opportunity to download a poetry printable if you wish)
As a way of staying accountable to something, I also have a little (ok big!) dream to write a poetry book, and having read recent post about how she wrote her books and self published them, I feel inspired to begin sewing seeds for that dream to come to life.
Poems are like a spell to me, they have a different energy to formulated sentences and somehow they just land in me differently. You can listen to, or read a poem, and it can speak to you in mere moments. Sometimes they settle on the surface and sometimes they sink in deep. Some poems doing nothing for me, and others reach parts of me I didn’t know needed tending to. When I share my poetry I trust that the words will always be received where they are needed, and will simply slide over those they are not for.
My poems come to me thick and fast, I write them mostly on my Notes on my phone and they aren’t polished - this is why I love them so!
This particular poem came this week, on the first day of the school holidays, I stepped out of the shower and was greeted by a bright pink plastic Unicorn and a tiny green fairy on the floor. Both had been discarded there, and the girls where nowhere to be seen, but something about those objects sparked words to flow and lead to the poem below.
There is a unicorn in my bathroom
There is a unicorn in my bathroom
And a fairy on the floor
A dinosaur sat on the sofa
And a rainbow bag on the doorThese early years are full of colour
Of magic, mayhem and more
I watch your imagination unfold
And feel a sense of aweThe stories and the journeys
That each day takes you on
Are wild and crazy, deep and pure
Full of so much funAnd while I’m mostly observing
Not always taking part
You teach me more than you could know
You are showing me the way of heartYour big eyes lock to mine
As you question the world as it is
Curiosity your truest nature
A mind so inquisitiveEmotions build and crash back down
Tears and laughter intertwine
Salty skin and sweaty hair
Sometimes yours and sometimes mineThere are days when I wish time stood still
And times I beg speed up
Hours that pass like grains of sand
Then minutes that fill my cupIt’s a paradox of bliss and raw
A merging of all things
But always love is at the core
My darling you give me wings.
I hope these words bring a smile to your heart today.

Until next time…
With so much love
